Common Amphibians in Sha Lo Tung: Hong Kong Newt
Amphibians and Reptiles

Sha Lo Tung nurtures at least 13 species of amphibians and 16 species of reptiles. Many frogs of the Ranidae family can be found in the ever-flowing streams, including the endangered Hong Kong Cascade Frog (Amolops hongkongensis). The open marshes nurture many frogs in the Ranidae, Microhylidae and Dicroglossidae families, including the Chinese Bull Frog (Hoplobatrachus chinensis) which is listed in Key Protected Animal List of China: Class II. In addition, Hong Kong's only Caudata, the Hong Kong Newt (Paramesotriton hongkongensis) can be seen in Sha Lo Tung. There are also reptiles such as lizards, snakes and turtles, including Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko) and King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), which are both listed as Endangered in the China Red Data Book.

However, amphibians and reptiles are not only threatened by the degradation of the environment, but also by illegal poaching.
